Spoiled
Since i moved to KW, one of the things that i hate the most is when food goes bad or is wasted.
Here's the reason. Of all the things that i've had to learn to adjust to since moving, cooking for myself, buying groceries and filling my stomach all on my own have been the toughest.
So every time something is about to spoil or in some cases, is spoiled, instead of being a fool and throwing it out, avoiding any sort of illness,
Here's the reason. Of all the things that i've had to learn to adjust to since moving, cooking for myself, buying groceries and filling my stomach all on my own have been the toughest.
So every time something is about to spoil or in some cases, is spoiled, instead of being a fool and throwing it out, avoiding any sort of illness,
i try to eat it.
This is what any courageous, intelligent man who knows the value of food would do. I laugh in the face of food poisoning.
Here are some of the things that i've eaten or thought about eating:
1) Norm's fish stew.
This was my first triumph in KW. Norm forwarded this recipe to me. Fish stew is a staple at many of our small group meetings. It's delicious. When most people hear fish stew, they picture something gross. Norm's fish stew is amazing. In fact, this dish keeps very well too! (if refigerated) I forgot/decided not to refigerate it.
Effect: didn't smell too good. Smelled even worse when i microwaved it. In fact, it stunk up the whole house and Eugene came running out of his room, complaining and opening windows! It tasted bitter. The mushrooms and the last couple spoonfulls tasted especially bitter. i had a lot of trouble sleeping that night. My stomach felt really uncomfortable and i was sweating. However, the next day, i was fine. No diarrhea. Nothing. gg.
2) dark brown, smooshy, bananas.
+ brown spots + smooshy
Bananas were on sale at a local grocery store. It was so cheap. i bought two big bundles for 29 cents/lb. i placed the bundles on top of the refigerator. i think that's a bad place to keep your bananas as they seemed to ripen a lot quicker up there!
Effect: i ate all my bananas except for two brown, smooshy ones. they ripened too quickly and i was forced to make a decision. i opened up the first one and it was 90% liquids, slurped it up quickly and found that it wasn't too bad. it just fermented so i could taste some alcohol. i decided against slurping up the second one as i felt i had triumphed over enough rotten bananas for one day. No ill effects.
3) Sprouted potatoes.
BUT imagine those sprouts being purple and 1/2 m in height, projecting radially in all directions out of a squishy potatoe.
i found these in the cupboard. Apparently, the people who lived here before abandoned them but my roomates and i didn't know. We all thought one of us owned them. At first, i didn't know they were potatoes. i only saw the sprouts and thought they were some sort of vegetable in a bag. that is until i looked in the bag and realized what they were. After some careful contemplation and research into sprouted potatoes and realizing they could kill me really really fast, i decided against trying to eat it.
Get this: my housemate Ewan initially told me they were ok to eat! They were frickin' sacs of poison!
4) Green onions and ginger sauce.
i make this to eat with my chicken. it is composed of green onions, ginger, salt, sugar, sesame oil and regular oil. You mix everything together except the oil which you heat in a pan and pour onto your concoction. i made a lot as the ginger was starting to rot. i stored it in the fridge and tried to use it a couple weeks later.
Effect: it tasted kinda funky and really really salty! Otherwise, no ill effects.
5) Europe's best summer fruit salad.
for some reason, it won't let me upload this picture! http://www.europesbest.com/_index2.php?langue=en_us&page=5
My latest triumph. One of my roomates left this to defrost in the fridge and then moved out. For a while, i'd periodically inspect it as it had inflated and i could feel the bag was under a lot of pressure. i thought nothing of it and left it. Yesterday night, Euge came home and discovered it had exploded open at the top.
Effect: it smelled fine so i ate it. there was a lot of juice and i think it fermented like the banana did and basically became fruit juice with a low percentage of alcohol. i must say it wasn't bad at all! It had some bite! No ill effects. in fact, i just drank another cup and i have one more to go.
